Médias numériques, communication numérique, monnaie numérique - "Numérique" est un mot qui indique l'innovation. Il est donc souvent utilisé pour décrire l'avenir des choses. Cependant, dans le contexte du Dancehall, il signifie à peu près le contraire :
Bien que le Dancehall actuel, comme la plupart des musiques de nos jours, soit produit numériquement, "Digital Dancehall" représente le style de musique jamaïcaine, qui était populaire dans les années 80 après que le riddim "Sleng Teng" ait complètement changé l'esthétique du Dancehall. Les studios, où jusqu'alors des groupes comme les Roots Radics produisaient les riddimtracks pour les chanteurs, étaient désormais le terrain de jeu d'un nouveau groupe de magiciens de la musique comme Steely et Cleevie qui utilisaient des claviers et des synthétiseurs au lieu de musiciens en direct.
